The percentage of German cattle farmers who wish to invest in milking equipment has increased in 2019, compared to 2018.

This has been shown by the intermediate results of the survey with German dairy farmers by AgriDirect Germany GmbH. During the telephonic survey, several data were gathered, such as the current use of and investment plans in milking technique, but also new construction plans and renovation plans of stables. These intermediate results, based on around 2,000 interviews, may be subject to change until the end of the survey.

Investment plans milking facilities

The proportion of German dairy farmers wishing to invest in milking facilities has increased with 2.7% in 2019. This is the highest percentage since 2015. 63.5% of these farmers want to invest in a milking robot, 16.3% want to invest in a herringbone-milking parlor.

Renovation plans have risen

The renovation plans are increasing as well. After a drop in 2018 (2.5%), the level is now up to 3.5% in 2019, the same level as in 2017. The new construction plans have decreased slightly from 6.6% in 2018 to 5.0% in 2019. Last year, this percentage increased by only 1.6%.

Plans feeding technology stable

The proportion of dairy farmers wishing to invest in feeding technology has also increased a bit. After a downward trend in recent years, the investment plans in feeding technology seem to stabilise (5.6%). 60% of these dairy farmers want to invest in an attached machine, 21.5% in a self-propelled machine and 11.2% in an automatic feeding system (feed robot).

Investing in bunker silos in 2020

9% of dairy farmers want to invest in bunker silos. A quarter of these farmers is planning to do this investment within the first 6 months of 2020. 17.8% wants to invest in the second half of 2020.
